1991 honda civic-Check engine light is on-how do i check it?

1991 honda civic hatchback with car trans and 1.6l FI 16 valve motor. when the gas pedal is suddenly depressed more than about 1/3 of the way the engine revs down and it bucks frequently until the driver lets off. the check engine light is immediately on and i need a site detailing the way to check it (i went to autozone and asked them however apparently this is one that requires a jumper wire or paperclip and consequencely, flashes a light a specific number of times). if somebody could assist me locate such a site and or provide me a number of ideas on whats wrong i'd certainly appreciate it. (by the way, please dont respond with answers for example take it to a mechanic, or purchase a code reader-for the reason that that's not what im asking). thank you!
