Temp Gage on the fritz?

I've a 2001 Honda Civic. I've not had a single difficulty with this car up til this day. the Temperature gage goes from Cool to RED in a matter of seconds. However the car isn't/doesn't overheat. I was told that if I adjust my thermostate that that ought to alleviate the dilemma. Does this sound like it would be a solution? Also how difficult is it to adjust a thermostate myself? Thank you in advance
